Malaysia

Duration: 20th February – 7th March & 22nd Apr – 7th May 2009.

My ♥ fluttered as the plane touched down on the tarmac of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Sigh, I truly missed the airport. Seriously. Before marriage, a major part of my life involves chauffeuring family and friends to and fro the KLIA airport – lame isn’t it? Anyways, no flights for me during that period. Reality struck huge when it was my turn to board the plane for US, more than 3 years ago. Time flies.

I almost raced to the baggage claim and immigration. And then I saw them, at the arrival gate. Mom and dad.

Awaiting impatiently, I could tell 🙂 A tear rolled down my cheek. I wept. It’s been 3 years guys! We reunited, got to the car park and head for home. Mom asked, “what do you feel like eating?” Gosh! I truly missed Malaysian cuisine. We went ahead for local breakfast, and duh.. it had to be our staple nasi lemak and teh tarik! Yummylicious 😀

Mom enjoying nasi lemak ;)

Mom enjoying nasi lemak 😉

Arrived home with a full tummy, jet-lag and tiredness! Phew! It was a long journey back home. I snoozed and awoke a couple of hours later to the most delicious scent of aloo pakora’s 🙂 Mom, you are the best! What more can I ask for?

The next few days were packed with embassy appointment to renew my US visa, shopping, food sampling, dinner and lunch appointments with family’s and friends’. Fun was short-lived when I met with an accident. Nothing serious, no bodily harm or injury. Bumper dangling from each side of the car, with serious dents, bumps and bruises. Not to forget the fine of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 300 that was slapped to me by the Police for allegedly not keeping a safe distance with a vehicle that was ahead of us. It’s a law in Malaysia, if you hit a vehicle at rear, you are automatically issued a ticket. It’s a very good law, only if I am immune to it 🙂 Sigh. The repair itself costs an additional RM600. What a luck? I am sorry for damaging the car Dad 🙁

Lesson learned. The hard way.

A while back, I had created a category called “Character of the Day”. I want to create a new embracelet to introduce some of my favorite reads for a long time now. The first blogger that I am keen to introduce is Su Yin Huen. She is a Malaysian, studied Construction Management in Australia and attended Notter School of Pastry in Orlando, USA. I know, she is a multi talented girl. She creates masterpieces that would make one go “oohh and ahhh” or “ga-ga”.

Su started blogging while attending UNSW university in Sydney Australia. With self-taught techniques, attained from cooking & baking for her roommates, she discovers her new found interest in the art of cake decorating.

It all began with a spark of enlightenment from picking up a tiny block of fondant icing and a brochure hidden within. She thought to herself; “WOW! The things I could do with THIS!!” by Su Yin.

Su’s journey by far, has been a fun roller coaster ride. Upon returning from Notter School of Pastry, she begin realizing her dreams of opening her own designer cakes and more shop. Yes, you read it right. She is an awesome cake designer. And if you are in Kuala Lumpur, hop over to her designer cake shop where you would droll over Su’s creatively crafted creations. From cupcakes, to birthday’s and designer wedding cakes – the creative concept begins with themes and design ideas tossed around with her clients towards creating a mega show-stopper. Delectable have featured in many articles, and this is just the beginning 🙂

She believes our precious eyes deserve as much a feast as our noses and tastebuds are so lucky to enjoy. Life’s too short for ugly food *wink* by Su Yin.

To visit, sample and drool over Su’s creations, you can visit her shop or contact her at:

Delectable @ S-213, Level 2, The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Don’t worry, she often rants/blogs @ The Journal of a Girl who Loves To Cook

Embracelet for Su Yin :)

Embracelet for Su Yin 🙂

Congratulations Su Yin, for all your achievements! Here is your embracelet 🙂 I hope you like it as much as I have, creating it 🙂

Love life, engage in it, give it all you’ve got. Love it with a passion, because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it – Maya Angelou.

I can’t recall when was the last time I actually slept for 6 hours or so. The max was 3 hours. For months. It was grueling. And was about to be even more nightmarish :) The flight from Orlando to Amsterdam, though pleasant, I could not sleep a wink!

Gazing into Netherlands

Gazing into Netherlands

Arrived at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on 17th Feb 2009, at 11:30am. It’s freaking chilly! As I make my way towards the baggage carousel, I realized that I did not know which carousel would have my luggage. So, the panicky girl I am – I panicked! Calm down Kiran, there is nothing to worry about. So what if these people spoke more Dutch than English? I approached an officer on duty, and with a sigh of relief, he explained to me where I would get my carousel information. In English! Yay! Hail O’ Netherlanders!

I claimed my luggage and walk towards customs and security, with a breeze. It was a “touch and go” security. At God’s speed. Har*, Jessy* & Tas** was constantly on sms with me, awaiting for my arrival. Very sweet of them 🙂 Meeting them – with teary eyes, laughter & smiles – after a very long time. Bitter sweet reunion. Thank god Jessy brought a jacket and scarf for me. It’s freakishly cold! What’s wrong with the EU weather? It was chilly, dark and gloomy.

Jessy & Tass apartment :)

Jessy & Tas's apartment 🙂

We headed towards Jessy & Tas’s apartment, where I was greeted with warmth from the heater and amazing scent of home made food. Pure bliss. We ate, laughed, shared stories and exchanged gifts for one another. Though extremely exhausted – not sleepy – the feeling of content, being surrounded by family are beyond words.

18th February 2009 – We decided to stay put at home due to my lack of sleep, exhaustion and jet lag. The next day was my next direct flight, and this time, the destination would be Malaysia – Truly Asia. I barely slept at all :) Perhaps due to excitement?

Part 3 coming up, stay tuned!

I am thoroughly devastated…

Recently, it has been difficult reading Malaysian news. Politicians like Datuk Ahmad Ismail should be detained under the ISA for calling all Chinese in Malaysia squatters. Instead of feeling guilty or apologetic, he believes he did NO wrong in saying so. I can’t imagine if we were let out loose if any one of other race, be it Chinese or Indian, were to make such derogatory remarks about the Malays. Can they explain justice in this? This politician is now walking free without any detention, merely a 3 year suspension from UMNO.

It is time to abolish ISA and come to the terms of basic human rights. Let’s begin listening for once and not shun Malaysians who wants their voice to be heard and justice prevail. Three ISA detainees, namely Raja Petra Kamaruddin a blogger, Teresa Kok a state assemblyman and Tan Hoon Cheng a journalist, are going through significant ramifications for sharing their ideas and beliefs. Race has been a huge issue in this country. How long would the majorities ill treat the minorities and turn our country into shambles? Known to many as a multi-racial country, we are heading towards a road of colorless beliefs, ethics and ethnicity. Wake up people, it is just not about YOU, it’s all about US, EVERY ONE OF US.

Instead, bloggers and journalists are being targeted under a draconian law. One of basic human rights I believe is freedom of speech. The right to express or challenge opinions legitimately. Not by living in a cocoon society where one is under scrutiny 24 7. A monarchy ruling and government that constitutes democratic parliamentary, surely the people of Malaysia expects more than just a push-over political tactic every now and then.

MALAYSIA BOLEH! God bless…

Happy Independence Day to all Malaysians!

This year is a little special to me as it would be my first post on Malaysia Independence Day since the day I started blogging. So, let’s make it extra special shall we?

Malaysia
I fetched this idea from a web-friend of mine, Lemonade. But instead of answering all the questions with a personal relevance, I have answered with some “Malaysian” twist to it, in commemoration of Independence Day today.

The rules are simple. Here it goes:
1) Type your answer to each of the questions below into Flickr search.
2) Pick an image only from the 1st page (no cheating by flicking through dozens of pages) 😉
3) Copy and paste the respective URLs for all the images into Mosaic Maker.
4) Last but not least, don’t forget to have FUN! 🙂

My results:

mosaic478376
Here are the Q & A’s:

1. What is your first name?
Kiran. Not looking as cute as the baby in the mosaic, that’s for sure.

2. What is your favorite food? Right now?
Roti Canai of course. Being a Malaysian, duh…

3. What high school did you go to?
Sekolah. Sri Garden was not even established back then. I had no choice, there were limited images on flickr with the key word “sekolah”.. Fun eh?

4. What is your favorite color?
All the colors on Malaysia Flag including BLACK. Let’s keep it neutral shall we? Remember, the old school days rule on hair ribbons? Blue, Black and White? Yikes!!! I am immune to it now.

5. Who is your celebrity crush?
Starbucks (celebrity factor) Frappucino (crush factor). No rules on the question being more specific on he or she or IT (industry), right? Do I have to explain further?

6. Favorite drink?
Teh Tarik for sure. It is in every Malaysian’s bloodline (dare I say it’s true?).

7. Dream vacation?
Pangkor Island, Malaysia. I’ve never vacationed there, or any where else in Malaysia! That’s exceptionally SAD!

8. Favorite dessert?
Ice Kacang & Cendol. If you are a Malaysian, you’ll know what I am talking about. Shall I dare recommend the best cendol stand in Malaysia? The stand is between Jalan Desa Aman 2 and Jalan Mutiara Timur intersection very close to Cheras Leisure Mall Shopping Centre.

9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
A proud MOM of a son who does not “wrestle”, literally.

10. What do you love most in life?
My families

11. One Word to describe you.
Colorful. Do you agree?

12. Your Flickr name.
WeScribble… neatly, I hope.

Once you are done, don’t forget to credit the images from Flickr to the owners.

Flickr Credits:
1. Happy Birthday Kiran!, 2. Roti Canai at The Curve, Damansara, 3. Sekolah Sri Garden, 4. malaysia’s flag, 5. Starbucks Java Chip Frappucino, 6. Teh Tarik, 7. Sunset at Pangkor, 8.
