The lies they tell you in high school

Happy Monday. Not Grumpy, I hope 😉

These days, I’ve been missing anything and everything about my childhood. No doubt, that was one of my best memories. We grew up in a joint family, living at a small city. It was so safe to walk to school and every one practically knew each other. Yeah, there were plenty of family drama, nosy neighbors and gossips that would fly off the handle faster than CNN or Foxnews.

Of course, everything is not perfect in life. I literally grew up believing handful of facades handed to me for a couple of years. It definitely annoys me, just looking back at those memories. Here are some of those facades, and please do share your qualms as well. I am sure there’s plenty.

Your schedule was created with YOU in mind

That is why my backpack was stuffed to the brim for every single day, with books as thick & heavy as barnyard reclaimed woods. The schedule wasn’t created for me. I was expecting to get a book on “how to magically transport that 60 pounds backpack”.

These will be the years you would look back, fondly.

After inheriting those humps from slouching, there’s no looking back.

All teachers treat every students equally.

Argh! Are you kidding me?!? *hair-pull*

You will use algebra in your adult lives.

Nope. At least not as a writer.

Bus drivers are highly trained professionals.

Tell that to my frizzy and disheveled hair. All I wanted was black, shiny and beautiful long tresses.

We want to hear what you have to say.

Huh! Is this some type of a joke?!

You are figuring out what you want to be in your adult life.

Nope. I was busy figuring out how to skip forcibly relay practices to go for a badminton tournament. Or how to skip weekend classes to go swimming or fishing with the family. Or how to skip … well, I was a schemer. And I blame YOU.

There is no such thing as new textbooks.

I usually ended up with overly used ones, that needed to be replaced. By me. With my own money.

Discipline makes you successful.

Not everyone would want to join military, ya know.

Final exams would be a piece of cake.

Unless and until I can have a cake and eat it too, this was definitely a serious allegation.

Childhood memories was the best, but I’m sure as hell don’t miss being lied too. What did you NOT miss being lied to during high school?

You know even I thought I would never use algebra again; until I took the GMATs two months ago!

Other things I was lied to about were:
– Deciding and working towards a career from a young age will guarantee you success!! (Yeah right)
– Kill with kindness. (Hell no)
– A mean person is actually hiding a deep insecurity. (Ummm no. Some people are just mean because they can be mean)

“We want you to hear what you say?” reminds me of the time in school when the teacher noticed me and my friend giggling and asked me to share the joke with the entire class. I thought she was serious and told the joke and the entire class started laughing. The teacher asked me to get out of the class 😀

“Not everyone would want to join military, ya know.” – Hahah! Cheers to this 😀 Even I was under an assumption that Algebra is of no use after school! I am struggling now. Competitive exams, you know. They are cruel!

Harsha,
We all went through the struggles — I know you would do well, sweetie. Best of luck 🙂

I agree with almost all of your points, I guess the generations don’t matter, somethings never change! However, I have some doubts about algebra and discipline bits – I struggled so much with both and chose a life path where I could do without them, I think that they did serve something – exactly what I don’t know, I am trying to work that out ..

12 Kiran December 19, 2011 at 12:11 AM

Sunil sir,
I concur with your observations — this post was meant to be taken quite lightly and not literally. I am aware of the importance of what we’ve learnt and how the application is often necessary in the real world. We are all seeking to work that out as well 🙂

Good one…the lie I believed in and wanted to grow fast was:
Study hard, get good grades and get a job then life would be a smooth sailing… I don’t have a life only a job and a family…

14 Kiran December 19, 2011 at 12:14 AM

Bemoneyaware,
I think we all grew up too fast and didn’t enjoy our childhood enough. Life is all about living at the moment and we seize that opportunity for something else, every time.

Haha, very funny. Yes, my advisor told me I wouldn’t get into college if I didn’t take precal. He made me cry. I did take it, but it didn’t do my average any favors!

16 Kiran December 19, 2011 at 12:16 AM

Katherine,
Oh, I can relate to your experience as well. I wonder if they were bullied in the same manner to have done that to us? 🙁

Thank you — but this post was meant as a reminder of our childhood memories and not to be taken so seriously 😀

23 Destination Infinity December 16, 2011 at 7:05 PM

One lie that was told to me was, ‘Once you work hard during your schooling, life will be so good, Its just a few years…. etc’. One needs to come out of school to understand how much more difficult life is, afterwards! Why tell such a lie in the first place?
