When life gives you lemons

… make lemonade. Though its not officially summer.

There’s a whole lot of legal stuff going on here in the Casa d’ KiranTarun, but let me spare you these painful jargon details. Lets just say that “when the going gets tough, the tough needs to get going”. And we are about to make tough decisions in the coming months.

Don’t get me wrong since I can’t get into details. Rest assured, I do love my life, my husband and our marriage πŸ™‚ Ok, take a deep breathe and read.

***

When we married a few years ago, we had to instantaneously leave our families and friends back home to start anew in this unknown land. Scary? Yes. Excited? Of course! I landed in Austin, Texas and we moved a lot throughout US – the Hubby was on contractual assignments. I, on the other hand, left my corporate job with a multi-national firmΒ  and begin securing a MBA from an Australian university, via distance learning. From Austin, we moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky and from Kentucky we became Southerners by moving to Florida in late 2007. That is when we decided to purchase our first home, together. And that, was a big deal since we didn’t thought much about, let’s just say, “long term repercussions“.

We immediately settled into our new home and new life. Time flew by, I graduated with MBA and Tarun is happy with his career. One thing that has been difficult for us – staying apart from families and friends back home. Of course, we tried filling the void by inviting our families over, taking trips to visit them etc. But it’s never the same. We often miss celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, festivals, or just quality time together. Don’t get me wrong – we have plenty of friends and have fun living here in Florida. Not to forget, we are so thankful for the existing technologies such as Skype, Facebook & this blog where we are able to keep in constant touch with loved ones all around the world. It’s just, never the same πŸ™‚

Uber sporting girls & ladies of my life.

Oh yeah, did I mentioned before I have a sister that lives in London and another, in Amsterdam? I feel bad for our parents since we are all out of Malaysia, living in different time zones.

How do you ease yourself into a new environment, culture or society? Is there such a thing as “the best technique”? Who or what do you miss the most?

I really know how it feels to live away from your family. Hope all the issues get sorted out soon.

Divya,
Thanks you so much for your comforting words πŸ™‚ Glad to know many people are going through the same phase in life and are there, supporting each other. Another reason why I find solace by blogging about it.

I came to this country over 20 years ago and it’s still hard:) Even though I try to go back every summer, toting the kids and sometimes my American husband, and even though my parents visit often, I missed so many happy occasions.
Just like you, I keep in touch with friends and family via Skype and my blog. And my sister lives in Frankfurt, so our parents are not any happier than yours:)
We cry every time we say goodbye, but how sad it would be if there were no one to cry for me and no one who would miss me? That makes it much easier:)

Lana,
Hello and welcome to Chatterbox. I am glad this story of mine seemed to be so common amongst many people. You are right, I cannot imagine if no one misses me or even cry when I return to US πŸ˜€

Dinu,
If not lemons, what does life throws at you – generally? πŸ˜‰

Quite the modern family, living across timezones. BTW, loved the picture at the start of the post. Nothing signifies summer (my favorite season) quite like nimbupani!

Ideasmith,
Hello and welcome to our world! We are not quite a modern family just because we live across different timezones πŸ˜€ We are where our job takes us. Thanks a lot, even I love nimbupani πŸ™‚
